The Need
A Critical Workforce Gap

Tarrant County College will launch an Associate of Applied Science degree in air traffic control (ATC) in 2027 to address a critical workforce shortage affecting the Dallas-Fort Worth and national aviation systems. The Federal Aviation Administration relies on air traffic controllers to safely manage nearly 45,000 flights daily yet remains understaffed by thousands. Nowhere is this shortage more acute than in the DFW region, home to the world’s second busiest airport and one of the most complex airspaces in the nation. The program positions TCC to directly strengthen aviation safety, improve efficiency and support economic stability across North Texas and beyond.

The Opportunity
High Demand, High Wages

Air traffic controllers are essential to guide safely the commercial, cargo, military and general aviation traffic that fuels the Texas economy. In Texas, ATC positions are projected to grow 5.11% over the next decade. In DFW alone, the past year saw 1,796 job postings, average salary $123,715 — 17% more postings than the national average.

The Advantage
Faa-Aligned Training At Tcc

TCC’s program will align with the FAA’s Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI), which prepares students for the FAA Academy through simulation-based, FAA-aligned instruction. No air traffic control programs exist within 50 miles of Dallas-Fort Worth, and no Texas community college has enhanced programs of this kind. Through a Memorandum of Understanding with the FAA, TCC students will receive FAA Academy-equivalent training. CTI program graduates may bypass the FAA’s initial Air Traffic Basics course, allowing accelerated entry into advanced training and hiring.

Industry-Driven Program Design

TCC’s Aviation Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from local aviation business and industry partners such as American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Bombardier and Gulfstream, has been engaged throughout the development of the program. The committee expressed strong support, citing urgent workforce shortages, regional demand and the need for locally trained professionals.

The Investment
Building The Training Infrastructure

TCC is seeking funding to acquire and install air traffic control training equipment and complete facilities upgrades. The Tarrant County College Foundation is partnering with leading aviation companies to help fund this investment in workforce training infrastructure.
